Dental Sedation is used with many patients who feel nervous or anxious about their dental treatments. Dr. Rundle earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from The Emory University School of Dentistry in 1975. He practiced Dentistry for 3 years in the US Navy Dental Corps. Rest assured, depending on the depth of the sedation and anesthetic being used, as well as your own medical condition, various monitors are used. These vary from automatic blood pressure cuffs, to the use of pulse oximeters which through a light sensor measure the oxygen concentration in your blood. The doctor along with at least one trained member of the staff will always be with you to closely observing you throughout your treatment.

The patient's fear of dentistry can be controlled with sedative medications given by Dr. Rundle. These medications are given to the patient and taken by mouth before and during the dental procedure. In so doing, the patient is totally comfortable and at ease throughout his visit. At all times, the patient is aware of his surroundings, yet he is blissfully relaxed and secure, without fear.

You have 3 options
1. Local Anesthetic alone
2. Local Anesthetic with Nitrous Oxide
3. Oral Conscious Sedation (which involves local anesthetic, possibly Nitrous Oxide, and oral medications)

All dental procedures done at Cosmetic Dentistry of Lake County can be done with oral conscious sedation

Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous Oxide or "laughing gas" is a type of inhalation analgesic that helps to relieve a patient's anxiety and allow him to relax during dental treatment. The gas is inhaled through a nosepiece that the patient's wears throughout the dental procedure. The gas is mixed with oxygen so that the patient is at all times getting more Oxygen than is contained in the air around him. The patient exhales through the same nosepiece and the gas is exhausted down the drain. When the dental procedure is finished, the patient is allowed to breathe pure Oxygen for a few minutes to clear the effects of the gas, In this way, the patient leaves as clear-headded as when he arrived. Ask Dr. Rundle if Nitrous Oxide is right for you.

Oral Sedation
Oral Conscious Sedation allows a patient to have a completely stress free dental appointment! With the help of an oral sedative administered by Dr. Rundle before and during the dental procedure, the patient is awake at all times, yet is anxiety and pain free. He is totally relaxed and comfortable and could care less what is going on around him. Following treatment, a sedated patient may or may not remember the procedures he just underwent. In any case, he will still feel relaxed and refreshed when he returns home after the visit. Ask Dr. Rundle if Oral Conscious Sedation is right for you.
